Asis Sanyal (1948, Kolkata, India)
Asis Sanyal's interest in photography can be traced back to the Science classes in high school. Since his growing up age, he borrowed cameras from friends and relatives, and tried his hands in framing time and life. In 1969, on receiving his first salary, he purchased a Russian camera, all for himself. Over the years, Asis realized that he required more time to pursue his passion earnestly. So in the year 2000, he happily took a voluntary retirement from his job as a banker, and since then, has taken up photography with all the seriousness it demanded.
Since 2003, Asis has been receiving recognitions from various competitions and exhibitions from around the world, the recent being the Grand Prize of the Insights Photo Contest (2007), sponsored by National Geographic and Intercontinental Hotels Group; the runner-up award in the One City Many Destination Photo Competition (2007) organized by the City magazine, New York; second prize in ‘nature category’ in Gujarat State Lalit Kala Academy Exhibition and second prize in Incredible India Photo Contest (2006) organized by the Ministry of tourism, GOI, to name a few.
Asis works with elements from nature as his subject. He captures landscapes with subtle contrasts of plenitude and scarcity, richness and neglect, which form the essence of people’s daily lives, particularly in the rural regions of Bengal. His photographs are rich in color and texture.
Asis currently lives and works in Kolkata.
