Jantina van de Vreede (Rotterdam – The Netherlands, 1959)
For Jantina, art is first and foremost a conduit, a vehicle for communication. Whether it is a poem, an opera, a sculpture or a photograph, each manifestation of art gives an insight in the thoughts and ideas of a people, an era and of course of the artist him- or herself. And despite the impression of them being self-preoccupied works, most art has a wider social impact, notably that of relationship-manager. In the two-way process that communication should ideally be, art can play the important role of mediator. It can bring people together who would otherwise never meet or see eye to eye.
This appeals to Jantina who often makes photographs that have a touch of the enigmatic in them and thus create room for conversation - for communication.
Jantina credits her knowledge and expertise in photography to the creative guidance at the Academy of Photography in Amsterdam, her association with artists and photographers and her untiring reading and visits to museums and galleries around the world.
Jantina is a business executive and has lived and worked in The Netherlands, Germany, UK, Sweden, Japan. She is currently living in New Delhi.
